As far as I played I found two secret areas in Buccaneer.
1) The Caves that are found east of the first Town To access the caves you must speak with the old man near the tree that is somewhat above the ground and then he will give you somenthing you must take to town. I'm not sure how you will get that mission but, that's the way you can acces the caves.
2) The Beach west of the Southern Town (Sand town) To access the beach you must get past the area with the ghost in the South of the Sand Town. Do not exit the town just go South. There is a boy in the Northen Part of the town that will tell you in how many days the ghost will appear. If it says in 0 days that means you can get the thing that is needed to break the wall to the beach, if it says more than one day then exit the area and return etc. If it says 1 day and you are in the Sand City then you can die by touching bees or smthing like that. One day equals one in-game day(go).

I have just broke the wall to get onto the beach, all I did was press the Space Bar and it automatically knocked the wall away. So no you do not have to change or press anything to use the Hammer!

those are not secret areas, anyone can get to the caves just by doing their quests. the caves are called buldadouk or something, if you get to chose a quest it's totem for buldadouk... nothing special. and talking to that one guy in the desert let's you know when you can pick up the hammer (day 40 and later)
